Noah Syndergaard has descended from Asgard to show Mets fans how Norse gods can pitch! Syndergaard, aka Thor, pitched as well as anyone could have hoped in his first of hopefully many games at Citi Field. With a fastball averaging around 97 mph and devastating breaking balls, Syndergaard showed why he is the top rated pitching prospect in the Mets organization. He showed great control and poise through his 6 innings of work allowing only one earned run on 3 hits, one walk, and hitting only one batter (and boy did he hit him). Granted it was against the lowly Milwaukee Brewers, who have a team batting average of .227 and have scored a total of just 142 runs on the season (25th in the league). Regardless of the opponent, Thor had an impressive outing in his first pro game at Citi Field.
Syndergaard showed he can swing the bat as well. In his first at bat he made good contact and drove one deep to the right-center gap which Milwaukee center fielder, Carlos Gomez, tracked down nicely and caught. Gomez and Synergaard had themselves a battle throughout the game. Syndergaard made Gomez look straight up foolish in his second at bat. He got Gomez to take two bad swings at breaking balls down and away. Gomez literally swung himself out of his helmet on the first pitch and gave an awkward one handed swing on the second pitch. The at bat eventually ended with a fly out to Lagares in center field. The third at bat Thor finished Gomez off. He beamed him with a 97 mph hammer to the skull and killed him. RIP Carlos Gomez (just kidding Gomez is alive and well).
Mets fans have to be happy with what they have seen from their exciting young pitching staff. The pitching rotation for next season could possibly be Colon, Harvey, DeGrom, Wheeler, and Syndergaard. If you’re a fan of any team other than the Mets and you’re not afraid of that rotation, you don’t know baseball. There is literally no weak link in that rotation. Now Sandy Alderson just needs to spend some money and get some bats to give these guys run support. No young pitcher is going to want to sign a contract extension if they think they will have to pitch a shutout every night in order to get a win. Sign some good free agent hitters and hold on to your young arms. With this kind of pitching rotation as a foundation, the Mets have the potential to be a very dangerous team.
Matt Harvey is on the mound tonight to take on a very good St. Louis Cardinals team. The Dark Knight fears no know one so it should be a great game. Happy Harvey Day everyone and lets go Mets!
